Discover Battle Abey

East Sussex

When it comes to history, Battle is King.

The Battle of Hastings is one of the most famous battles in history, and a visit to the battlefield at Battle Abbey is a must-do for any visitor to England.

This is where William the Conqueror defeated King Harold II and changed English history forever. The abbey was built by William soon after the battle and was one of the first Norman monasteries in England. It was later destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538, but much of its structure remains intact today.

During its lifetime, Battle Abbey was damaged by fire several times and suffered serious damage when Henry VIII dissolved all monasteries during his reign (1536–1540). The ruins you see today were mostly rebuilt during the 19th century when they were owned by Sir Walter Calverley-Clayton who used them as an estate office. Today they are part of English Heritage and run by volunteers who welcome visitors every day between April and October (except Mondays).
